"There's nothing better than hearing your daughter say, 'Mom, silent e is so cool!' She read me a 16-page phonics story after the first session. What's most important to me is the sense of pride and confidence she feels after tutoring with Carolyn."

Guidelines for Ongoing Regular Sessions

Students: Show up with your materials. Be prepared to be challenged for our entire session - you won't have time to tune out. Always take responsibility for your results, and do the work you promise to do.

Parents: Actively communicate with both me and the student.  Provide support for our process when needed. I'll provide expert help, a sense of fun, and high expectations. We'll reach our goals as a team.

"The Toolbox"

My focus is giving the students tools for their “toolbox” that they can reach for when confronted with certain academic challenges. Each student is unique in terms of goals, timeframe and needs. To institute lasting change, students need to develop new habits, which takes time . . . though we should see progress on a regular basis. Typically, the process works as follows:

Initial consultation:  A brief phone conversation with you regarding your concerns about your child.

Student Intake: 1 hour. Through conversation and a variety of assessment tools, I’ll identify strengths, challenges and form a plan to move forward. Providing any samples of current work in targeted areas is helpful. At the end of the session, you and I will have a brief conversation regarding my observations, recommendations and goals. Together, we will devise an initial strategy for reaching these goals. Finally, we will meet with your child and establish clear expectations for the role of tutor, student, and parent. All questions are fair game here.
